Sony Officially Releases PlayStation 2 In Brazil


Some gamers think that 2012 is too early to start the next generation of consoles. In Brazil, they're just now getting an official start on the last one.

According to Gizmodo Brazil (via Kotaku), Sony has officially started selling the PlayStation 2 in Brazil. It can had for a cool R$799, or around $465.

If you're wondering why a nine-year-old console is so expensive, it's because Brazil's import taxes have run as high as 60 percent since the mid-1990s. Not surprisingly, piracy via illegal street vendors and other outlets is high. In 2006, Brazilian site UOL (via The Escapist) estimated that illegally imported games made up as much as 80 percent of the Brazilian video game market.
