Vaan Shows Up in New Dissidia: Final Fantasy
Vaan, the main character of 2006's Final Fantasy XII, is the latest big-name addition to the roster of Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy, Square Enix's PSP crossover fighter. As director Tetsuya Nomura revealed to Weekly Famitsu this week, however, Vaan almost didn't happen at all because Square couldn't re-acquire the services of Kouhei Takeda, the character's Japanese voice actor. "We had made several offers starting at the beginning of this year," he said, "but due to assorted issues, Takeda and the agency he used to work with weren't able to come to terms and he was forced to turn us down. I began to be concerned about using Vaan at all, but he was already pretty well implemented in the game by the time we finally got a response, and besides, I knew that fans were waiting for his appearance." (Veteran actor Kensho Ono will be handling Vaan's Japanese voice this time.)
"Vaan is a 'switch attacker,' switching between weapons with each ability he uses," explained Dissidia 012 battle director Takeo Kujiraoka. "He has a large number of BRV attacks, and depending on how you customize his moves, he's equally capable in close or long range. Each ability is named after whichever weapon he's using for it, such as 'katana,' 'crossbow' and so forth."
